Instructions for DNA collection from saliva

Prepare to Collect Your DNA Sample

3 hours before collecting the sample:

  • do not brush your teeth

  • do not eat

  • do not smoke

  • do not use mouthwash

  • do not drink anything

  • do not chew gum

Check Your Kit

  • The kit includes a tube (A), a funnel (B), and a cap (C).

  • All components of the kit are dry.

Step 1. Prepare to Collect DNA

  • Put on protective gloves. This helps prevent contamination of your DNA sample and keeps it clean enough for testing.

  • Firmly secure the funnel. Attach it to the top of the tube and make sure it is securely in place.

Step 1 of DNA collection preparation: instructions on putting on protective gloves and securely attaching the funnel to the top of the collection tube.

Step 2. Collect the Saliva Sample

  • Fill the tube with saliva. Hold the tube with the funnel attached upright, bring it to your mouth, and gradually fill it with saliva until the liquid reaches the fill line.

Collecting saliva may take a few minutes. Take your time, and make sure only liquid — not foam — goes into the tube.

Step 2 of DNA collection: a schematic diagram showing saliva collection through the funnel up to the tube's fill line, measuring liquid only without foam.

Step 3. Remove the Funnel and Close the Cap

  • Carefully remove the funnel, keeping the tube upright.

  • Close the tube with the cap. Hold the tube upright and screw the cap on tightly to ensure a proper seal. As you screw it on, the cap pierces the protective seal, and the saliva mixes with the solution.

Step 3 of DNA collection: instructions for removing the funnel and tightly screwing on the cap to puncture the protective seal and mix the saliva with the solution.

Step 4. Prepare the Sample for Shipping

  • Invert the tube 10 times. This fully mixes the saliva with the reagent, stabilizes the sample, and preserves DNA quality for accurate lab analysis.

  • Place the tube in the envelope. Find the envelope among the kit components — it has the same design as the box.

To send your sample, follow the instructions in the email sent to the address you provided when ordering.

Step 4 of sample preparation: instructions to invert the tube 10 times to mix the saliva with the stabilization reagent and place it into the mailing envelope.

Already Have Genetic Data?

These instructions are for customers who purchased the Prisma DNA Test, the Wellness genetic panel, or the Ultima panel and received a DNA collection kit for a saliva sample.

If you have previously undergone genetic testing and already have a results file, there is no need to collect a new sample — you can order an interpretation of your existing data. However, before doing so, it’s important to make sure the testing method and file format are compatible with Apixmed Prism interpretation — more details are available in the instructions for submitting your own genetic file.
